For Sale By Owner

Published on October 6, 2008

It’s with a bit of mixed feelings that I announce that we are officially selling our place.  We’ve been wavering back and forth all summer about this.  The main (and probably only) reason for selling is that we are planning on moving back to Southern Ontario.  Both my and my wife’s families are there and [...]

Brassicas moving along

Published on August 31, 2008

I finally removed the row cover from 2 double rows of brassicas. On the left is primarily cabbage and on the right is brussel sprouts (with a few red cabbages in the front). They are looking great! Some of the cabbages were damaged early on from some insect or other. That [...]

Chicken Harvest

Published on August 28, 2008

OK, so I opted not to show a picture of the chicken harvest. Martin came by last Saturday to help me reduce the number of roosters I have. Slaughtering animals you’ve raised yourself must be the quintessential farm experience of connecting yourself to where your food comes from. I imagine it is [...]

Weekly Share #4

Published on July 7, 2008

Somehow I missed #3, but it looked a lot like #2.  This is the share for this week.  It’s exciting because there are a few new additions and several more things that just missed getting added and should be there for next week.  This week we have a large bunch of beets (chiogga beets which [...]

Late Spring photo album

Published on June 9, 2008

First CSA box will be next weekend, I am pretty sure. I think it will include the following: radishes (shown above), spinach, green onions, green garlic, lettuce and whatever else I can scrounge up, probably some herbs. I really hope the spinach holds out until then. Here it is:

Here is what [...]

Egg-Mobile in the works

Published on June 3, 2008

Above is the beginnings of the egg-mobile I’m working on (click to enlarge). The weather over the last half week or so has been very wet. I can’t complain about the rain, but it is so wet I’m trying to stay out of the garden beds. I still have several flats of [...]

What a load of Crap!

Published on May 3, 2008

Poo jokes never get old. Today was an exciting day. I received a tri-axle (dump truck) load of cow manure this morning. About 2 hours later another truck came with a load of city compost. I’ve been stressing for the last couple weeks about where I was going to get my [...]

Freedom

Published on April 10, 2008

Chickens
The chickens are enjoying their new freedom and dispensing of any earthworms immediately outside the greenhouse.  They’ve been confined to the greenhouse all winter and seem happy to explore other areas again.  I’m eager to get them into their summer home (a movable coop and electric fencing) so I can get to work inside the [...]

Where’s Spring?

Published on March 25, 2008

Because it certainly hasn’t hit Ottawa yet.  I’m feeling a bit frustrated with this unseasonably cold weather.  It would be great weather if it were late February, but it’s almost April and we are barely getting above freezing during the day.  Oh well, I’m sure it will be warm by June!
We have chicks!

The season has begun!

Published on March 14, 2008

Well, actually it began in January for me when I put in my main seed orders. But I guess planting began 2 weeks ago when I put in these first tomato plants. It will begin in earnest once all this snow melts. We got another 52 cm on the weekend and I guess we’re close [...]
