Week 16 CSA share

Published on September 30, 2008

This past week’s share is looking decidedly fall-like, right on time.  The share includes cabbage, broccoli (lots!), red head lettuce, parsley, carrots, radishes, bulb fennel, tomatoes, rutabaga, peppers and onions.  The fennel is the only kindof wierd thing in the share this week.  I have to admit to not having a lot of experience with [...]

Week 15 CSA share

Published on September 22, 2008

A couple new things this week:  Brussel sprouts and celeriac.  Some of the sprouts have loose outer leaves that should be stripped before eating.  The next batch should be tighter and more uniform in the cooler weather.  The celeriac tastes a lot like celery (surprise!) and is great eaten raw like carrots or in a [...]

Helping with Week 15 Share

Published on September 14, 2008

Week 15 share is being sorted out in the picture above with a bunch of helpers.  This week included onions, garlic, carrots, chinese cabbage, a watermelon, tomatoes, peppers, kohlrabi and a fairly large bunch of broccoli.  The chinese cabbage and kohlrabi are fairly new vegetables that you might not be used to.   I don’t [...]

Melons

Published on August 21, 2008

Better late than never, we finally started getting melons this week.  I find it quite hard to tell when they are ripe and we end up having them split and fill with insects.  The parts of the melon not affected is still fantastic.  Here you see 3 varieties I picked this afternoon: Halona at the [...]

Sweet…. Corn

Published on August 11, 2008

Finally!  We get to eat sweet corn from the garden.  After years of negotiating with the raccoons, we’ve come to an agreement that I can harvest corn for ourselves.  I have to say, it is amazing how much space this stuff takes.  I thought I might have enough to give a couple dozen to CSA [...]

Fruit

Published on August 7, 2008

Despite the fact that most of the crops in the garden are considered vegetables, a good number of them are actually fruit, botanically speaking of course, such as this tomatillo pictured above. Here’s a little photo sweep of some garden “fruit”. I apologize to those on dial-up trying to look at all this [...]

Turning point

Published on July 27, 2008

Usually about this time of the summer marks the point at which the quantity of vegetables in the garden is more than we as a family can eat. This has been the case for the last 4-5 years at least since the garden has been large enough. What this means is that each [...]

The Good with the Bad

Published on July 9, 2008

Above is a picture of what I grabbed from the garden for dinner tonight. Some exciting firsts for this season with the “Sun gold” cherry tomatoes, “Nyagous” tomatoes, new potatoes and Lebanese cucumbers. The potatoes were amazing! They are soft and buttery this early on. The sun gold cherry [...]

Weekly Share #1

Published on June 15, 2008

Well, it is a big day here at the farm. The very first pick-up of vegetables was today (photo credit goes to Don and his blackberry). In the picture you see mint, leaf lettuce, beet greens, green garlic, green onions, spinach, head lettuce and radishes. I guess the only ‘weird’ thing in [...]

Carrots Up!

Published on May 24, 2008

The first bed of carrots I planted have germinated fairly well from the looks of it (click to enlarge). I’m always a bit anxious about carrots coming up. They take a week or more to germinate and they’re pretty fussy about being moist and just below the soil for the whole time. [...]
